About Us 🦐
Certified Shrimp Enthusiasts
Two shrimp enthusiasts
Living the shrimp life, Fishtown style.

We are shrimp enthusiasts. Not hobbyists. Not casual fans. Enthusiasts — the kind who show up to a bar with glitter eyebrows and a cocktail shrimp in each hand like it's the most natural thing in the world.

Shrimp Jawn was born in Fishtown, Philadelphia out of a deep, abiding love for crustaceans in all their forms — boiled, fried, raw-bar style, or just appreciated from a spiritual distance.

We believe shrimp are more than a food. They are a lifestyle, a philosophy, and frankly a personality type. If you've made it this far down the page, you are probably one of us.

The Wonderful World
of Shrimp

🫀

Heart Up Top

Shrimp have their heart located in their head — making them literally the most passionate creatures from the very top.

👀

Ancient Eyes

The mantis shrimp has 16 types of color receptors — humans only have 3. They basically see the entire rainbow plus bonus rainbows.

🥊

Power Punch

Mantis shrimp can strike with the acceleration of a bullet. Their punch creates cavitation bubbles that implode with tiny shockwaves.

🌿

Older Than Trees

Shrimp-like crustaceans have existed for over 500 million years — long before trees evolved, making them proper ancient mariners.

🔄

Swim Backwards

Shrimp propel themselves backward by rapidly curling and uncurling their tail — the original reverse gear.

🌊

Global Superstars

Shrimp are the most consumed seafood on Earth by weight. Every continent has shrimp in their waters.

Shrimp of the World

Over 2,000 species. Here are a few distinguished members of the shrimp family.

🩷

Cherry Shrimp

Tiny, vibrant, and beloved in aquariums worldwide.

🥊

Mantis Shrimp

The heavyweight champion of all crustaceans. Do not anger.

👑

Tiger Shrimp

Giant, striped, and majestic. The royalty of seafood.

🩻

Glass Shrimp

Fully transparent. You can literally see their dinner.

🌊

Brine Shrimp

Survive in salt lakes. AKA sea monkeys. A childhood icon.

Crystal Shrimp

Patterned like a tiny jewel. The gemstone of shrimp-kind.

🖊️ Shrimp Poetry Corner

Odes to the Shrimp

Because every creature deserves a poem.

Haiku for a Shrimp
Pink and small you swim
Tail curled like a tiny fist
My heart, your ocean
Ode to the Cocktail Shrimp
Hung upon the rim of glass
adorned in sauce of red —
you are the party's MVP,
the greatest shrimp that's fed.
The Mantis Shrimp Speaks
I see your sixteen colors, friend,
and raise you sixteen more.
Your world is dull and grey to me —
mine blazes to the core.

Burning Shrimp Questions

Is a shrimp a bug?
Technically, shrimp are crustaceans, which makes them arthropods — the same phylum as insects. So... kind of? But sea bugs are much more delicious and considerably more charming.
Why do shrimp turn pink when cooked?
Raw shrimp have pigment molecules (astaxanthin) bound to proteins which keep them grey. Heat denatures the protein, freeing the pigment — and voilà, glorious pink. Science is delicious.
What is the "vein" in shrimp?
It's actually the shrimp's digestive tract. Deveining removes it before cooking. Yes, we're all aware of what it is. We still eat the shrimp. No regrets.
Can shrimp feel pain?
Research suggests crustaceans may have some form of nociception (pain response). It's a genuinely interesting scientific and ethical question. The shrimp themselves have not issued a statement.
Is "shrimps" a valid plural?
"Shrimp" can be both singular and plural (like "fish"). "Shrimps" is technically valid when referring to multiple species. But "shrimps" sounds funny, which is itself a reason to use it more.
